...when the weather is typically Mancunian!
Hope you are enjoying this lovely British summer: sunshine, rain, wind and all!
Over the summer weeks, the GMP band volunteers have a bit of a break from rehearsals and gigs. Well, we say a break, but there are always a few gigs that we manage to squeeze in, because we just can't resist them.
Some of us go on holiday with families and friends, some take the opportunity to do gardening and DIY, and some even manage to get in a spot of performing with *gasp* other bands!
This summer there have been a few new additions to the GMP band family too, as some of our players have welcomed the arrival of new children. Future musicians in the making!
Rehearsals for the wind band and big band start up again in a couple of weeks, and the preparations start for the autumn/winter busy season. There are lots of new dates being added to the calendar on our website, so be sure to have a look and see if we're performing near you. You can also keep up to date with us on Twitter and Facebook - do please follow and like us.
If you're thinking about booking one of our bands for your event, please get in touch with our manager Barry (details on the contact page)
The GMP Big Band performed at the Winter Wonderland spectacular at Event City on Saturday 17 December.
Here's a short clip of Chief Inspector Clara Williams, together with Andy Fenton, Clare Prior, Carol Rogers and Sarah Kent performing 'Santa Baby'
This is the band's second year performing at Winter Wonderland and we were happy to perform for so many people, especially those in the big queue to see Father Christmas himself!
Thank you to the organisers for inviting us to be part of your amazing event.
Frank started his musical career playing the cornet at school, from the tender age of 12. He joined the school band and Farnworth brass band. In 1968 he joined the Junior Musicians Troop at Woolwich, London and switched from cornet to the trombone. He went to Knellar Hall - the royal military school of music, and then returned to Woolwich to play bass trombone in the main band. He left in 1976 and took a break from playing, until picking up the trombone again and joining his local brass band in Radcliffe. Frank started volunteering with GMP about 12 years ago and now plays with the symphonic wind band and big band.
Helena has been performing with GMP Band since 2009. She's been playing sax and clarinet since the age of 12 and has always loved performing on stage, entertaining an audience.
She's played with a range of jazz groups, wind orchestras, function bands and for shows such as Guys and Dolls, Chicago and Bugsy Malone, but it's big band playing that is Helena's first love. She joined the Lancashire Students' Jazz Orchestra as a teenager, first on tenor sax and then moving to baritone, and there Helena developed a love for belting out a beefy bari bass-line, and as the rest of the band will tell you, she certainly doesn't shy away from those low notes!
