Bernard has been playing with Greater Manchester Police band for almost 30 years. He began playing the cornet at the tender age of 9. He played in many bands, orchestras and big bands in the Manchester area throughout the 1940s and 50s, then enlisted into the Royal Signals band, where he gained much experience during his six years service.
After the Army, Bernard joined Salford Music Service as a brass instrument teacher, eventually becoming head of the Department of Wind Music Studies; a post he held until his retirement. He was also Bandmaster of the Lancashire Artillery Band.
Bernard now plays with the Wind Band, Big Band and Fanfare Team. He has also been called upon to conduct the band and fanfare team on a number of occasions.
